Don Lowery passed away January 2, 2016. He was born to the late Lawrence and Thelma Griffiths Lowery on December 9, 1942. He is preceded in death by brother, Herb. Don is survived by devoted wife of 47 years, Dianne Wells Lowery; son, Aaron (Abbey) and grandchildren, Amaris and Aiden; and son, Lance (Christina) and grandchildren, Leah and Liam; brother, Max (Mary) and sister, Barbara (Steve) Petras; and many relatives and friends. Don resided the last year at Evan Dulero’s OUR FAMILY HOME. While there Don was blessed with gracious caregivers, especially Tamika, Fanta & April.
Don graduated from Marion Franklin in 1961, lettering in basketball and football. Starting as a teenager, Don worked at Blakeman’s Scioto Trails Swim Club (off and on for 10 years) as lifeguard, swim Instructor and manager. He was a Medic on Whitehall Fire Dept. and served with Ohio National Guard for several years. Don joined City of Columbus Police Dept. on Sept 30, 1968, started as driving a cruiser. Don was a devoted Husband and Father. He coached all sports for his sons and their friends. At this time, Don enjoyed many years as physical trainer for new police cadets. His last assignment was as Police Juvenile Detective Liaison with Columbus City Schools, retiring January 20, 2001.
Don enjoyed retirement years spending several winters in The Villages, FL while swimming, playing cards, pickleball, jogging, and especially driving a golf cart. When home, he enjoyed reading Westerns, activities at Dublin Rec Center, watching The Buckeyes and spending time with his family. At Don’s request, there will be no services. Donations may be made in Don’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association Research, Central Ohio Chapter, 1379 Dublin Rd., Columbus, OH 43215.
