Irwin Lodge “Bud” Bunton, age 87, of Hilliard, Ohio passed away peacefully on September 17, 2020. There will be a family graveside service in Madison, Indiana at a date to be determined.
Bud was born in Madison, Indiana on April 21, 1933. He is the son of P.L. “Paul” Bunton and Virginia Wagner “Jeanne” Lodge Bunton. He graduated from Madison High School. Bud had the rare opportunity to be part of an Indiana State Basketball Championship Team during his junior year. The Madison Cubs won the Indiana State Championship in 1950. 70 years ago!!! Bud was high point scorer in that championship game. He has maintained cherished friendships with the players on that team. He was also a center on the Indiana High School Basketball All-Star Team in 1951.
He attended Purdue University, was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, the Glee Club, and a member of the basketball team until he was injured. He transferred and graduated from Hanover College, where he met the love of his life, Sally. Bud was married to Sally Louise Stiles in the Prentice Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis on September 18, 1955.
Bud and Sally lived in his home town, Madison, Indiana for a couple years and then moved to New Castle, Indiana. They lived there for 37 years and owned Jan’s Hallmark Center, The Front Porch women’s clothing store and B & B Shoes family shoe stores with locations around Indiana. He was very active in the community as a member of the New Castle Chamber of Commerce, a member of the New Castle Community Schools Corporation Board of Education for eight years, a Board Member of the bank now known as MainSource, and a member of the Elks Club. They retired and moved back to Madison, Indiana for 17 years before moving to Powell, Ohio to be near family. They loved spending the winters in their Fort Myers, Florida home. After Sally died, Bud enjoyed living and making friends at Powell Senior Living in Powell, Ohio and then at Stone Oak Retirement Community in Hilliard, Ohio.
Bud and Sally cherished the many adventures and friends they made during their motor home travels around the country. They were members of First Presbyterian Church in New Castle, Indiana, Madison Presbyterian Church in Madison, Indiana and Liberty Presbyterian Church in Delaware, Ohio.
Bud is survived by his family, who adored him: daughters Sherrell Welcker (Keith) of Dublin, OH and Linda Holland (Tim) of Loveland, OH, daughter-in-law Gail Fielding Bunton of Phoenix, AZ, grandchildren Kim Welcker Fyrberg (Forest), Adriane Welcker Geesaman (Tyler), Monica Welcker (Ethan Broder), Calvin Bunton, Morgan Bunton, Annabelle Holland and Margot Holland, great-grandchildren Lucas, Annika and Kiera Fyrberg, sister-in-law Judy Mull Stiles Clark, nieces and nephews Scott Stiles (Terrie), Paul Tolzmann (Janet), Anne Obermeyer (Keith), Jean Dobyns (Rick) and Mary Weeks (Brian), as well as many great nieces and nephews and friends. Special friend, Beverly Jensen, was a delight in his years at Powell Senior Living and Stone Oak Retirement Community.
Bud is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sally, their son Robert “Bob” Bunton, parents Paul and Jeanne Bunton, sister Margaret Bunton “Peg” Tolzmann and her husband Jim Tolzmann, Sally’s parents Henry and Ruth Stiles, Sally’s brothers Robert Rasor and Dale Stiles, and sister-in law Nancy Demaree Stiles.
