Edna Virginia Yinger, nee Burgess, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Saturday, April 11, 2020 at the age of 86.
She was born in Greenup, Kentucky and raised near Wheelersburg, Ohio with her six siblings. After graduating from Wheelersburg High School, she joined the Air Force and served our country during the Korean War.
During her marriage she became a librarian at Indian Springs Elementary School and a thoroughbred horse breeder, racing horses at Beulah Park and River Downs.
In later life, Edna became a world traveler and visited all seven continents. Her most memorable trips were those with the Columbus Zoo to Rwanda and Antartica. She served at the Columbus Zoo for 25 years as part of the docent (volunteer) family where she was loved and respected. She was an avid bird watcher and expert.
The family wishes to thank their friends and Edna’s zoo family for all the kind words and gestures. The family will also be forever grateful to the staff at The Kobacker House for the tender care they provided.
Edna is survived by a sister and brother, three loving children, a son-in-law and daughter-in-law, four grandchildren, two granddaughters-in-law, and two great-granddaughters.
In lieu of flowers, please donate in Edna’s memory to The Kobacker House, Partners in Conservation at the Columbus Zoo, or an animal shelter.
Due to the current situation, a private memorial service will be held in the future.
